Its name reflects both its early harvest season and the fact that it is best enjoyed firm, with crisp, sweet flesh.

A Standard tree reaches 25 feet in height at maturity with a 20-foot spread, a low canopy clearance of about 4 feet, and a conical shape. When grafted onto smaller rootstocks, the pear does not reach such heights. Though vigorous, its growth pattern can be controlled with annual pruning. Leaves are dark green and glossy on top, grayish and dull beneath, with serrated edges. One-year-old wood is dark reddish-brown with tan lenticels, maturing to gray in successive seasons. Summercrisp flowers annually in early May, coinciding with ‘Patten’ and ‘Parker’ and 2–4 days earlier than ‘Luscious.’ It requires cross-pollination but produces abundant, viable pollen, making it an excellent pollinizer for other cold-hardy pear cultivars. White flowers with purple anthers appear in mid-spring on clusters along the branches.

Fruit is showy, pyriform in shape, chartreuse with a red blush, and bears abundantly in late summer. The pomes measure 8–10 cm long and 6–8 cm in diameter, often with prominent red lenticels. Summercrisp pears ripen in mid-August—about five weeks earlier than cultivars such as ‘Luscious,’ ‘Patten,’ and ‘Parker’—and have a soluble solids content of approximately 11° Brix at harvest. For optimal quality, fruit should be harvested while green with a red blush, immediately refrigerated, and consumed before any yellowing occurs, as postharvest ripening can lead to grittiness, browning around the seeds, and strong aromas that reduce eating quality. When properly handled, the fruit is crisp, juicy, and mildly sweet, and can be stored for up to six weeks. Summercrisp is not recommended for canning, as processing highlights grit cells.

Summercrisp is very vigorous and long-lived, with trees capable of living 70 years or more under ideal conditions. Foliage and fruit are generally free of pests and diseases, though pear scab (Venturia pirina) may occasionally occur.

The Summercrisp pear is well-suited for home orchards, small-scale plantings, and colder regions where other pear cultivars may not thrive. The flesh of the pear is white, juicy, and sweet, with a smooth, buttery texture. The fruit ripens in mid-August to early September and can be stored for several weeks after harvest. The Ayers pear is also known for its disease resistance. It is resistant to fire blight, which is a bacterial disease that can be devastating to pear trees. This resistance makes it a popular choice among growers who are looking for a low-maintenance and disease-resistant variety.

USDA Zone: 4-9

Mature Height: OHxF 97 ~17-21' tall; Semi-dwarf

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: August- early September

Pollination: Partially self-fertile but will benefit from another pear tree in the area.

Scientific Name: Pyrus communis 'Ayers'

What does Harrison think of this pear: Its an excellent balance to a Bartlett. Pear Trees

Developed by the USDA in Maryland and released in 1960, the Moonglow Pear’s brownish-green skin covers soft flesh with a sweet mild flavor. It was originally developed in the mid-1800s by Massachusetts horticulturist Thaddeus Clapp in Dorchester, making it one of the classic heritage pears grown in North America. The variety is believed to have arisen from a cross between Bartlett and Flemish Beauty pears, combining desirable qualities from both parents.

Clapp’s Favorite quickly gained popularity for its attractive fruit and dependable production in home orchards and commercial plantings. The tree typically produces large pears with smooth yellow skin often blushed with red when exposed to the sun. Inside, the flesh is white, fine-grained, and extremely juicy with a sweet flavor balanced by a slight refreshing acidity. Because of its rich juiciness and tender texture, the fruit is most often enjoyed fresh right off the tree. However, it is also commonly used in canning, baking, and making pear sauce or desserts.

One distinctive feature of this pear is that it ripens earlier than many other varieties, often about a week to ten days before Bartlett. The fruit is typically harvested while still firm and allowed to finish ripening off the tree for the best flavor and texture. Although delicious, Clapp’s Favorite pears have a relatively short storage life and are best eaten soon after ripening. The tree itself is vigorous and produces fragrant white blossoms in spring that attract pollinators. Like many European pears, it is not fully self-fertile and benefits from cross-pollination with another pear variety.

Good pollination partners include varieties such as Bosc, Moonglow, or Bartlett planted nearby.
