Porter's Perfection Apple
Named for Charles Porter, a farmer in East Lambrook, England, and was probably known to the public- or at least the local agricultural authorities by the mid-1870s. Grown now in many orchards, this old English cider variety produces a cider that is bittersharp in flavor that adds notable acidity and high tannin count (bestowing a dryness in the cider). The cider is gold or amber in color. This cider variety is slightly disease resistant.
The apple is rather striking. Its a yellow/green based apple that ripens a blush red inconsistently across the apple with sporadic russets and irregular growths around its equator. Even more unusual is its tendency to form fused fruit. Often two or even three apples fuse together to form large clusters on crowded branches. The flesh is white and is very juicy. The juice, however, is very tart and very astringent- these qualities lead to a fine cider but really make one pucker when eating. Ships Spring 2023.
