The Yellow Newton is a chance seedling from an older English variety brought to the US in 1755 by Dr. Thomas Walker. The apple grew well in Albemarle County, VA which sometimes bears its name. The apple was popular as a dessert apple for is mild tartness and pale green flesh. However, modern apples have pushed this apple out of demand and is usually found on older or hobby farms.
The apple is fairly large, chartreuse in color, and pleasantly tart. Its irregular shape is a dead give away as an heirloom apple. There is slight russeting along its stem. However, a modern push for heirloom options in the cider industry has help re-popularize this apple.
