Concord is the most iconic American grape, famously described by Horace Greeley as “the grape for the millions.” Developed in 1849 by Ephraim Wales Bull in Concord, Massachusetts, this vigorous and hardy variety produces medium-sized clusters of large, blue-black berries. Concord grapes are slipskin, tough-skinned yet juicy, with a pronounced Vitis labrusca flavor and highly aromatic profile.
Versatile in use, Concord is ideal for fresh eating, grape juice, jelly, jams, grape pies, kosher wines, and as a varietal or blending component for sweet wines. Its adaptability allows it to thrive on a wide range of soils and in diverse climates, ripening in early to mid-October in New York. Concord remains the leading table grape variety in the state and continues to be a cornerstone of American grape production due to its flavor, productivity, and market potential.
Vines are vigorous and productive, making Concord relatively easy to grow on single high-wire systems, fences, or arbors. The combination of slipskin texture and fruity aroma makes it a favorite for desserts and fresh consumption, though the presence of seeds and occasional skin cracking or post-harvest berry shelling can limit its use in some table grape applications.
