American Seedling of the Vandevere Apple discovered in Lampeter Township, PA. Discovered near the owner of the farm~ a Mr. William Gibbons'~ smokehouse. The apple gained popularity due to its cold hardy nature and its tender but commercially viable structure.
The apple is quite flat and round with green based skin gently touched by red vertical streaks when ripe. Its flesh is firm but tender and exceedingly juicy.
It is precocious even on larger rootstocks and crops reliably. Tree is upright.
Flavor is somewhat balanced though leans sweet when picked post-ripe to bring out its excellent cider qualities.
