Created in 1940 by Albert Etter after combing through seedlings from a 'Surprise' apple. He eventually settled on seedling #39- its properties were worthy of publication. In 1944, Etter introduced the Pink Pearl to the public. Published in California Nursery Company to market this red-fleshed apple, the apple has mostly flown under the radar compared to other red-fleshed apples. This is most unfortunate as it the Pink Pearl apple is an excellent apple. It bears earlier than other red fleshed apples giving it an unusual niche.

This red-fleshed apple is medium-large sized and has a yellow-orange translucent skin. The internal color varies from pink to a deep red. The pink crisp juicy flesh is tart to sweet tasting. This apple is best for fresh eating and pink apple sauce. The apple does not store well and ripens once they start to fall from the tree. Keep a watchful eye on this apple- once it starts to drop- its ripe and ready to eat. Enjoy this apple quickly or can/jar for longevity and can store for up to 4 weeks.
