The American Hazelnut is a deciduous shrub native to Eastern North America. Specifically native to Missouri, this shrub is primarily used for the nuts it produces. It can grow to 10-16' tall and around 8-13' wide. It produces flowers in Spring that are about 2-3" long- the plant is monoecious (male and female flowers on the same plant) and typically produces Hazelnuts within a few years and is tolerant of most soils types. However, all fruiting plants prefer well drained soils. Hazelnuts are edible nuts and are usually roasted to bring out their flavor.
