First grown from a seedling in Gloucester, England in an orchard owned by William Ashmead. The ‘Kernel’ in the name also suggests it was a chance find. This is a rather interesting looking apple: green undertones covered by brown russets that turn slightly orange on the sun side. The russets give this apple skin a healthy texture but is not too thick. Where this apple shines, however, is its taste. Described as intense, flavorful, mad, sharply tart, and complex. Set to fruit in 3-4 years from grafting.

Tree is scab resistant and mildly disease resistant. Planting should be taken with slight caution- the tree is a triploid and will need two other apples to pollinate but will not pollinate other trees in return. Both an heirloom and disease resistant, this apple meets plenty of criteria and works well to vary orchards.
