Grown in the Normandy region of France and noted as early as the 1870s, the Binet Rouge apple is primarily a cider apple. Designated as one of several apples used in making Calvados~ a traditional French Brandy. The apple grows well in wetter environments but does not do well in high winds and is not drought tolerant.

The apple is small to medium is size and appears flattened. Its skin is greenish-yellow that blushes red with dark stripes on the sun exposed side. It exhibits a slight russeting around the stem. The flesh is pale yellow with a fine grain and is firm. The apple produces a complex flavor distinctly for cider production.
