First discovered in New Jersey in the late 1700s at a farm owned by a Mr. Matthew Campfield (hence the name) and soon because a renowned cider apple. Described some 40 years later in William Coxe's book "A View of the Cultivation of Fruit Trees and the Management of Orchards and Cider." Generally sweet with strong tannin sensation- a common feature of heirloom cider apples. Yellow-ish in color that blushes red when ripe. Fairly cold hardy and a late ripener. Branches tend to grow upright with a vigorous growth habit. Tree tends toward biennialism and should be pruned to ensure annual harvests.
