First developed at the Univ. of Idaho's Agricultural Experimental Station in 1942 as a cross between the Jonathon and Wagener apples. The Idared has firm, fine grained flesh that is white. Its skin is usually uniformly red but can be green around parts that do not get as much sunlight. It taste wonderfully tart and juicy. However, the Idared's stand out trait is its fragrance. An uncut apple smells with floral, perfume, and citrus. A great baking apple- the Idared keeps its shape and flavor when cooked but is also commonly used in apple butter.
