Originally planted in 1958 at the Illinois Experiment Station in Urbana (a sub-section of the PRI Breeding Program) and was named Coop 2. The 'Prima' name comes from this being one of the first apples available from this breeding program. Currently, the program has released 44 different apples.

The Prima is a dessert apple and is disease resistant to apple scab. This early apple ripens in September about a month before Delicious. It is lime green in color that blushes to a cardinal red over 70-80% of the apple's surface. It has a rich flavor that lasts for about a month in storage but like other early apples, this should be eaten soon after harvesting. It is medium-grained, crispy, and juicy with an Empire yellow colored flesh.
