The Red Delicious is among the most popular of varieties. This particular cultivar of Red Delicious originates from Peru, Iowa in 1872. Since then, the name 'Red Delicious' has grown to encompass more than 50 different cultivars. They all share many traits: dark red skin, yellow to creamy flesh, very sweet, and mildly juicy.
Commercial trends and an increase variety has lead to this apples decline in popularity. Over 42 different sports has emerged from this apple yielding many planting options beyond the original apple. It is used for eating and backing and combines well with tarter apples for a well balanced flavor. This apple is a mid-season bloomer and ripens also mid-season.
