The Northpole columnar apple tree is a compact, upright variety bred for small gardens, patios, and high-density plantings. It produces medium to large apples with a deep red to dark burgundy skin that is especially striking in the fall. The flesh is crisp, firm, and juicy, with a balanced sweet-tart flavor that leans slightly toward the tart side. These apples typically ripen in mid to late September, depending on local growing conditions. Northpole apples are excellent for fresh eating and are also well-suited for cooking, baking, and making applesauce.
This variety is not self-fertile and requires a compatible mid-season blooming apple tree for proper pollination- anything from bloom group 3 would work well. The tree has a true columnar growth habit, producing fruit on short spurs along a single upright trunk rather than wide branches. Mature trees usually reach 8 to 12 feet tall but remain very narrow, typically only 2 to 3 feet wide. For best results, plant Northpole in full sun in well-drained soil with good air circulation. Regular watering is important during the first few years to establish a strong root system. Minimal pruning is required, but removing any long lateral shoots will help maintain its signature columnar shape. A useful planting tip is to space trees about 2 to 3 feet apart in rows or even use them as a living hedge for both ornamental and edible appeal.
