This apple was one of several cold hardy varieties imported from Russia to help with Western Expansion. In the 1870s, as Americans moved into colder and drier climates out West, the Yellow Transparent made a perfect apple due to its short growing season. This is one of the first apples to be ready for harvest and demonstrates a resistance to apple cedar rust.
It is medium sized, yellowish green, and mildly tart. Its flesh is slightly crispy with a decent bite but like other early apples, it does not hold it shape very long; but is perfect for apple sauce. Good for very cold or high in elevation areas. The tree stay fairly small regardless of rootstock and pollinates other early apples. Some evidence suggests this apple can grow in Zone 2. The image with flowers in it was taken in zip code 55422.
