One of the earliest cold hardy varieties in Minnesota (though not from the University!). In the 1860s, Peter Gideon was finally able to cross his last tree, a Siberian Crabapple, with Cherry crabs he bought from Maine and created the Wealthy Apple. The tree was named for his wife, Wealthy (Hull) Gideon. By the early 20th century, the Wealthy apple was one of the top five apples grown nationally and helped form a base tree for the University of Minnesota's Breeding Program.

The Wealthy Apple is small, slightly larger than a golf ball, with green base skin. It blushes from bottom to top- an unusual trait- and is ruby red in color. Flesh is white and vinous with a hint of strawberry. The Wealthy tree stays small and compact and is a profuse bloomer over a long period of time. The blooms are white and the tree is an excellent pollinator. Read more about Peter Gideon and his quest for a cold hardy apple
