This seedling tree was discovered in the high Sierra Mountains in California and thought to be a left over from the 1840s Gold Rush. Therefore, the parentage of this apple is unknown. Eventually, scions of this tree were granted at the Gowans farm in northern California and the family continues to grow this apple.
It is remarkable in two ways~ it is a natural dwarf, not growing very large on any rootstock. It is also a self fertile apple tree. These traits make it excellent for home gardeners without much space.
The apple is fairly large with light green skin that blushes a pale yet prominent pink when ripe. Its flesh is yellow, juicy, breaking (meaning its super crunchy and easy to bit off) and quite flavorful. Good for baking and eating.
