The Franklin apple (also known as the Mayo apple) represents a modern triumph for both cider enthusiasts and home orchardists. Discovered around 2008 as a chance seedling by Bill and Susan Mayo in Franklin, Vermont, this variety was officially released in 2017 after proving its mettle as a rugged, low-maintenance survivor.
The tree is exceptionally cold-hardy and is prized for its high disease resistance to apple scab, cedar apple rust, and fire blight, making it a reliable annual bearer even in challenging environments. Its fruit is a rare "bittersharp" gem; while it packs the high tannins and acidity required for world-class craft cider, it also boasts a high sugar content that makes it sweet enough to enjoy straight from the branch. Maturing in mid-October, the Franklin apple is a versatile powerhouse that brings commercial-grade quality to the backyard garden.
