Early 1800s Tennessee cider apple. This variety is one of several Limbertwig variants that have regained popularity in the recent decades. First trees were probably chance seedlings in the southern Appalachians Mountain Ranges. The modern Limbertwig strains are thanks to breeding and cultivation efforts of Henry Morton who propagated several dozen Limbertwig strains in the 1980s. Now, as was back then, the apple is commonly used in cider production.

The apple itself ranges quite widely in appearance depending on growing climate. While cold hardy, it prefers slightly warmer environments to reach peak ripeness. The apples range in color from yellow to a dull red and are quite large. Described as having a herbal spicy flavor in yellow flesh.

The apple tree naturally "weeps" slightly making for easy pruning, noting that they are tip-bearing trees. It also produces abundant apples and is disease resistant. These also make lovely trees to try your hand at creating an espalier.
