The Highland pear tree is a European pear variety developed through a breeding program at Cornell University’s New York Agricultural Experiment Station. It was created from a cross between Bartlett and Comice pears by breeder Dr. George Oberle in 1944 and was later introduced commercially in 1974. The tree is valued for its hardiness, productivity, and ability to grow well in colder climates such as USDA Zone 4.
Highland pear trees bloom in mid-spring, producing clusters of fragrant white blossoms that attract bees and other pollinators. Fruit is typically harvested in early October, though it is often picked slightly firm and allowed to ripen after harvest for the best flavor. The tree is known for moderate disease resistance and tends to be less susceptible to common pear problems than some older varieties. It is also a vigorous grower that can produce reliable crops of pears once established.
Like most European pears, the Highland pear tree is not self-fertile and requires cross-pollination from another pear variety. Compatible pollinators often include varieties such as Bartlett, Comice, or other mid-season blooming pears planted nearby.
The pear itself s a large, attractive dessert pear known for its smooth texture and rich flavor. The fruit is typically yellow with light russeting on the skin, giving it a slightly golden appearance. Its flesh is creamy white, fine-grained, and very juicy when properly ripened. The flavor is sweet and full with a rich, classic European pear taste. Highland pears are often harvested firm and allowed to ripen off the tree to develop their best flavor and texture. Because of their excellent quality, they are commonly enjoyed fresh as a dessert pear. They are also suitable for fruit salads, baking, or preserving. The pears store well in cool conditions, allowing them to be enjoyed well into the winter months.
