Native to the lower Midwest in the US, the Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) tree is a common sight in Midwestern yards and is known for its huge heart-shaped leaves, and gorgeous trumpet-like flowers that bloom May to June. The flowers are the singular host to the catalpa sphinx moth and is a valued nectar source for bees early in the season.
The trees were first harvested in 1754 to use their rot resistant wood to build fence posts and railroad ties.
Its seeds are contained in long, narrow shells resembling bean pods. Tree is quick growing, deciduous (loses it leaves in winter.)

Pollination: To reproduce, two Catalpa trees are needed. However, it does not produce really edible fruit and is primarily grown for its flowers and leaves.
