The Stella Cherry comes from the John Innes Institute in Norwich England. In 1964, scientists a the Brookhaven National Laboratory irradiated the genome of dormant Stella scion wood producing a tree that grows to about ½ the size of the original Stella Cherry.
A smaller tree like the name suggests, the Compact Stella Cherry works well for orchards where space is a premium. Topping out at 10-15', this cherry grows well in higher spaces and is self fertile. It blooms in mid-Spring producing white clustered blooms that yield to deep ruby red fruit. The cherry itself is average size but saturated in color and is lovely to behold.
