Long known to be one of the parents of the prodigious Golden Delicious~ the Grimes Golden apple was originally discovered in an orchard in West Virginia in the 1830s. Its skin ranges in color from a pale yellow to a light green with prominent lenticels. The skin is thin with a solid crack when bitten; it also russets slightly at the poles. The flesh is stark white and is slightly soft but still provides a good crunch. It is juicy with mild sweetness to balance and normally tart subacid flavor.

It serves multiple uses but is primarily used as fresh eating, baking, and cider production.
