Developed at the Atlantic Food and Horticultural Research Centre in Kentville, Nova Scotia in 1986, the Nova Spy became commercially available in 1995. It is a cross between the Nova Easygro and New York 44411-1 (Northern Spy x Golden Delicious). The 'Spy' in its name means one of it's parents is the Northern Spy Apple.
Bred to be more disease resistant than the Northern Spy, the Nova Spy is a medium sized apple with yellow skin that blushes to a deep red color when ripe. It is somewhat irregularly shaped with five unequal lobes. Its flesh is a creamy yellow color. It is fine-grained, firm and juicy with a tart flavor. Like its parent, it is a great pie apple.
The Nova Spy is resistant to Apple scab and powdery mildew.
