Reine de Pomme Apple Tree

The Reine des Pommes, translated as the "Queen of the Apples," is an archaic French bittersweet cider variety originating from the La Guerche region of Brittany. Unlike the famous Reine des Reinettes dessert apple, this variety is strictly used for cider production due to its high tannin content and firm, off-white flesh.

The fruit itself is small and slightly flattened, featuring a dark red skin with carmine stripes often overlaid with bronze russeting.

The trees are characterized by their vigorous, upright growth habit—which tends to spread and droop as they age—and a strong tendency toward biennial bearing. While highly productive and particularly fond of clay soils, the variety is somewhat susceptible to common orchard diseases like fireblight, scab, and powdery mildew.

When pressed, it produces a high-quality juice that contributes deep, dark-fruit flavors and essential structure to traditional tannic ciders.
