The Black Satin thornless blackberry is a semi-erect variety developed by the University of Illinois as part of a breeding program focused on improving hardiness and thornless traits in blackberries. It produces large, glossy berries that ripen to a deep jet-black color, giving the fruit an attractive, almost satin-like sheen. The berries are juicy with a mild, slightly tart flavor that becomes sweeter when fully ripe. In USDA Zone 5, Black Satin typically blooms in late May to early June, depending on spring weather conditions. Harvest generally begins in mid to late July and can continue into early August with a steady crop of fruit.
This variety is self-fertile, meaning it does not require another blackberry plant for pollination, though planting multiple varieties can improve overall yield. Black Satin is highly versatile in the kitchen and is commonly used for fresh eating, jams, jellies, pies, and freezing due to its abundant production. The plant has a vigorous, semi-erect growth habit that benefits from trellising to support its long canes. Mature plants typically reach about 5 to 7 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 5 feet. It is known for being productive and relatively easy to manage thanks to its thornless canes, making harvesting much more comfortable.
Fun fact: the Black Satin was one of the earliest widely adopted thornless blackberry varieties, helping pave the way for modern, user-friendly blackberry cultivation in home gardens and commercial plantings.
