The pawpaw is a prehistoric wanderer, once distributed by Ice Age megafauna and later cherished as a "poor man’s banana" by Native American tribes and early American explorers alike. In English, the word "pawpaw" was derived from European explorers who thought the fruit was papaya. Thought of America's first forgotten fruit.

As a hardy understory tree, it stands out with its lush, tropical-looking foliage and curious maroon, bell-shaped flowers that bloom in the quiet of spring. The fruit itself is North America’s largest native treasure, offering a creamy, custard-like interior that tastes like a whimsical blend of mango, banana, and pineapple.

Grown in social "patches," this resilient tree remains a soulful link to our continent’s ancient past and a sweet, often-forgotten secret of the forest. A delightful, beautiful, historic tree. There is some evidence this tree can grow in USDA Zone 4.
