Introduced by horticulturalist Luther Burbank in 1899 and is part of 113 plums credited to his creation. The Salicina is native to China but grows well in warmer climates in North America. The Shiro Plum is actually one of his lesser known varieties yet it has survived due to due a number of market features that made it more commercially viable than other plums Burbank created.

The Plum itself is golden yellow in color with yellow flesh and is medium sized. Slightly conical in shape around a smaller pit- though the fruit is considered a clingstone. It is tart and juicy. The trees are easy to grow and are abundant producers. Some evidence suggests this tree can grow in Zone 4 but the flowers are frost sensitive. Its flowers are snow white and cover the tree in early Spring.
