The Canby red raspberry is a classic summer-bearing variety released in 1943 by the breeding program at Oregon State University, where it was developed for improved fruit quality and adaptability. It produces large, bright red berries with a smooth, attractive appearance and a notably tender texture. The flavor is mild, sweet, and pleasantly rich, making it especially popular for fresh eating. In USDA Zone 4, Canby raspberries typically bloom in late May to early June, depending on seasonal conditions. Harvest usually begins in early to mid-July and continues for several weeks as the berries ripen.

Canby is self-fertile, so it does not require another variety for pollination, though planting multiple cultivars can increase yields. The berries are excellent for a wide range of culinary uses, including fresh eating, jams, jellies, freezing, and desserts. This variety is especially valued for its nearly spineless canes, which make harvesting much easier compared to traditional raspberries. The plants have a vigorous, upright to slightly spreading growth habit and commonly reach 5 to 6 feet in height with a spread of about 3 to 4 feet. Canby raspberries are known for producing high yields of uniform, easy-to-pick fruit.
