Strawberries
Today's modern strawberries, after many journeys and cross-pollinations, originally hailed from France and then cross-pollinated yet again, with our native Virginia Strawberry ( Fragaria virginiana).
Strawberries are a low lying, ground covering plant that grow best in well drained, moist soil. Botanically speaking, the strawberry is not actually a fruit; they are members of the Rose Family (Rosacea). Interestingly, "real" berries have their seeds on the inside...and strawberries wear their over 200 seeds beautifully adorned on the outside.
Grown in every state in the US, the strawberry does like some additional support for ease of harvesting. Because the fruit is far heavier than the foliage, strawberries should be planted on a little berm that allows the fruit to hang slightly below the leaves; making them easier to harvest.
