Brunswick Lowbush Blueberry was discovered in a commercial lowbush blueberry field in Albert County, New Brunswick, and later tested and evaluated in Kentville, Nova Scotia. This vigorous cultivar produces first-year stems up to 12 inches tall and features ovate, deep green leaves slightly over one inch wide.
Up to 20 light blue berries may form at the tips of each stem. The fruit is considered relatively large for a lowbush type and is produced in outstanding yields. Berries offer excellent wild blueberry flavor with a fine balance of sweetness and tartness. Plants are hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 7.
Brunswick is an attractive, compact shrub that produces abundant crops of flavorful, sky-blue berries set against glossy, dark green foliage. Decorative, urn-shaped white flowers appear in spring, followed by fruit in early to mid-summer. In fall, the blue-green foliage turns striking shades of bronze and red, adding strong ornamental appeal. Its low, spreading habit makes it an excellent groundcover or low border plant.
Edible Qualities
Brunswick Lowbush Blueberry is primarily grown for its edible fruit, though it also provides ornamental value. The round, sky-blue berries ripen from early to mid-summer and have a firm texture with a pleasantly tart flavor.

Planting & Growing
At maturity, Brunswick Lowbush Blueberry reaches approximately 6 inches in height with a spread of up to 3 feet. It fills in densely to the ground and typically does not require companion plantings. Growth rate is moderate, and plants can live for 20 years or more under ideal conditions. While partially self-pollinating, fruit production improves when another lowbush blueberry variety is planted nearby.
Plants perform best in full sun to partial shade and prefer evenly moist, well-drained conditions. They require sandy, acidic soils and may develop chlorosis in alkaline soils. Brunswick is sensitive to urban pollution and performs best in sheltered locations away from heavy traffic. In colder or exposed sites, a thick layer of winter mulch is recommended for protection. This cultivar is a selection of a native North American species.
Brunswick Lowbush Blueberry also performs well in containers. Its spreading habit makes it ideal as a “spiller” in mixed container plantings. When grown in pots, plants may require more frequent watering and may vary slightly in performance compared to in-ground plantings.
