Fredonia is an early-ripening Concord-type grape, maturing approximately two weeks before Concord. Highly winter-hardy and very vigorous, Fredonia is valued both as a table grape and for juice or jelly production. Berries are large, blue-black, and borne in well-filled clusters, with color often deeper than Concord in southern regions.
While Fredonia shares the Concord-type appearance, its flavor is slightly less pronounced for juice and jelly, yet it remains a reliable choice for both roadside table grape sales and processing. With careful pruning, vine vigor and productivity can approach that of Concord. Clusters are moderately susceptible to downy mildew, so attention to disease management is recommended.
Disease susceptibility:
• Black rot – slightly susceptible
• Downy mildew – highly susceptible
• Powdery mildew – moderately susceptible
• Botrytis – slightly susceptible
