Ok, this is a ridiculously sounding name but it actually has kind of an interesting history. The Hubbardston comes from a town in Massachusetts. The Nonesuch makes more sense in French where it translates to sans égal or non pariel which translates to 'without equal' or 'not the same.' The tree is a vigorous grower with an attractive, well-branched form and produces abundant harvests. It is highly suitable for large-scale orchard cultivation. It is of average/general resistance but is somewhat susceptible to canker but very resistant to apple scab.
The fruit is large, with a round-oblong shape that tapers near the eye. Its smooth skin features a yellowish base, adorned with irregular streaks and splashes of pale and bright red. The calyx is open, and the short stalk sits in a russeted hollow. The flesh is yellow, juicy, and tender, offering a pleasing balance of sweetness and acidity. Flavor improves in storage but storage does not last long- use within 6 weeks for best flavor.
