The Meteor Cherry is a genetically dwarf tart cherry that reaches approximately 8–10 feet tall at maturity, making it an excellent choice for home gardens and smaller spaces. This self-fertile variety begins producing fruit just 2–3 years after planting and does not require a second tree for pollination, though nearby cherries can improve yields. Trees have an upright to spreading habit with a mature spread of about 8 feet and a low canopy clearance of roughly 2 feet, allowing planting beneath power lines.

Meteor produces large, glossy, bright red cherries with clear, yellowish flesh and a classic tart flavor. Fruit is well suited for pies, sauces, juice, baking, and fresh eating. Heavy crops are common, with mature trees capable of producing 50 pounds or more per season. Bloom occurs in early April, followed by mid- to late-season harvest. The tree is especially noted for its abundant spring flowers and reliable fruit set.

This variety is exceptionally cold hardy, tolerating winter temperatures of -40°F and below, and is well adapted to USDA Zone 4. Some evidence suggests this cherry can tolerate temperatures down to -50 putting it squarely in USDA Zone 3 but we have been unable to substantiate these claims. Meteor performs best in full sun with good air circulation and evenly moist, well-drained soils, though it is adaptable to a wide range of soil types and pH levels. It does not tolerate standing water but is highly tolerant of urban conditions and pollution. Under ideal conditions, trees may live for approximately 30 years.

Meteor is believed to be a cross of Montmorency and a Russian-type cherry selection and is classified as an interspecific hybrid (Prunus cerasus). It should be pruned during winter to encourage new fruiting wood and maintain productivity. Recommended spacing is 10–12 feet, with wider spacing improving airflow and reducing disease pressure.

Cherries are susceptible to bacterial canker, which can cause branch dieback and bronze-colored sap exudation on limbs or trunks. Preventive copper sprays applied in fall or winter can help reduce damage. Bird pressure may require netting or deterrents such as reflective tape.
