Niagara is a vigorous, productive grape variety prized for its large, amber-green slip-skin berries and sweet, juicy flesh with the classic wild woodsy flavor inherited from Concord. Developed from a Concord seedling, it was once commonly referred to as the “White Concord.” Today, Niagara is the leading green grape grown in the United States and is widely used for fresh eating, juice, jams, and sweet wines. In fact, the combination of Concord and Niagara grapes helped establish Welch’s as one of the nation’s most recognized juice producers.

The berries have thick skins and a rich, fruity flavor that appeals to many home gardeners. Niagara vines are exceptionally winter hardy and typically ripen about one week earlier than Concord. Their vigorous growth and reliable productivity make them excellent choices for backyard vineyards. Although Niagara has a devoted following, it is generally not considered a premium wine grape because fully ripe fruit can develop strong “foxy” aromas and flavors. For wine production, grapes are often harvested at about 14° Brix or slightly earlier to preserve a more balanced character.
