The Norway Maple was introduced from Europe in the 18th century as a shade tree. Now a common sight in landscaping in the eastern US, this maple is fast growing and voluminous in its leaf production. It produces some seeds in the spring time and turns bright yellow in Autumn. Cities often plant them along boulevards due to their pollution and drought tolerance. The leaves are heavily lobed with five distinct points and bears a striking similarity to the Canadian National Flag. Its lower sugar content makes it less attractive to deer which tend to eat the bark of sugar maples.
