Radiance Pearl Cherry Tree

The Radiance Pearl cherry tree is a modern sweet cherry cultivar developed through breeding work at Cornell University in New York, where it was originally tested under the selection name 'NY 7679' before being released for commercial and orchard use.

The variety was bred to produce a high-quality Rainier-type (yellow) blush cherry that ripens earlier in the season, helping growers extend the harvest window for premium yellow-and-red sweet cherries. Radiance Pearl trees typically bloom in the early to mid-season, usually just a few days after the bloom time of many standard sweet cherries. Like most sweet cherries, the tree is not self-fertile and requires cross-pollination from another compatible variety such as Rainier or Ebony Pearl to produce reliable fruit.

Once pollinated, the cherries mature relatively early, with harvest generally occurring around mid-May through early June in warm growing regions, roughly 5–7 days before Bing cherries. The fruit is large, firm, and attractive with yellow skin blushed with red, and it is known for its exceptional sweetness and high sugar level. Radiance Pearl cherries are excellent for fresh eating, but they can also be used for desserts, baking, preserves, and fruit salads thanks to their firm texture and rich flavor.

The tree itself is vigorous with a spreading growth habit, allowing good sunlight penetration and helping develop the fruit’s characteristic blush color. Mature trees typically reach about 15–20' tall with a similar spread, depending on rootstock and pruning practices. The variety is also valued for its moderate productivity, good storage qualities, and some resistance to fruit cracking.
