Hardy to temperatures as low as -35°F, this cultivar is a sister seedling to St. Croix. It ripens roughly one week later than St. Croix, reaching about 20° Brix at maturity. It shows excellent disease resistance and is among the most resilient vines in our collection. Vines have a trailing growth habit and strong vigor. This variety may be well suited to regions that are too cool for many other cultivars. It tends to perform best in cooler seasons or on colder sites, though hot locations can occasionally lead to off-aromas.
The resulting wine is deeply colored with pronounced fruity character, featuring appealing berry aromas and flavors. Tannin levels are moderate, while acidity tends to be relatively low, making it a good candidate for blending with higher-acid varieties. It produces an exceptional sweet red wine that sells rapidly. The variety is sensitive to sulfur.
Sabrevois is closely related to St. Croix and offers improved winter hardiness. Sugar levels are generally modest, and wines often show pleasant fruit notes but lighter body and tannin structure, suggesting strong potential as a blending component with other compatible red hybrids.
