A fast growing tree in a family of already fast growing tree. The Poplar is renowned for its columnar shape, glossy foliate, and strikingly yellow autumn transformation. First introduced by South Dakota State University the 'Siouxland' enhances the standard Poplar in several ways. The trees grow more quickly, adding several feet of new growth every year. This extends to the root system and was often used in erosion control.
The Siouxland has serrated leaved that are glossy with a high sheen. The tree is catkin-less and does not drop its Summer cotton like the eastern Poplar. Then, in Autumn, it leaves transform into a canopy of yellow and gold. The trees pyramidal shape helps to catch the light and shine even brighter.
The tree is often used on berms and dams to help with erosion control. The tree prefers moist but well drained soils and can tolerate both floods and droughts. It is also adapted to both alkaline and clay soils. Their vigorous root system helps form solid wind breaks and retaining walls.
