Talisman Blueberry Bush

The Talisman blueberry bush is a modern northern highbush cultivar developed by the USDA-ARS breeding program, with its original cross made in 2000 and selection completed in 2005 in New Jersey. It was bred from a cross between ‘Magnolia’ and ‘Elizabeth,’ combining southern and northern highbush genetics to improve adaptability and productivity. This cultivar was released as a public-domain variety, making it widely accessible to both commercial growers and home gardeners.

Talisman is known for its very late bloom time, which helps it avoid damage from late spring frosts, making it especially reliable in colder climates. It ripens in the late-midseason window, typically producing a concentrated harvest that is ideal for efficient picking. The berries are medium to large, with a light blue color and a uniform, attractive appearance. Their flavor is mild, sweet, and delicate with low acidity, making them enjoyable for fresh eating. 

In terms of culinary use, Talisman blueberries are versatile and can be used fresh, in baking, or for processing due to their good firmness and storage quality. The fruit’s uniform size and easy detachment also make it well-suited for mechanical harvesting, a trait valued by commercial growers. The plant itself is vigorous and robust, with a rounded growth habit and somewhat narrow base. Mature bushes typically reach around 4–6 feet in height with a similar spread under good growing conditions.

Talisman is highly self-fertile, meaning it can produce fruit on its own, though cross-pollination with other northern highbush varieties can improve yields. It demonstrates good field resistance to mummy berry disease, a common fungal issue in blueberries.  The plant is also quite cold hardy, tolerating temperatures down to about −27°C (−16°F), making it suitable for northern growing regions and is hardy to zone 

A fun fact about the Talisman blueberry is that it was specifically bred with mechanical harvesting in mind, featuring fruit that detaches easily and ripens uniformly for efficient large-scale production. Additionally, its unusually late flowering makes it a valuable choice for growers in frost-prone areas where other varieties may struggle, Overall, the Talisman blueberry bush is prized for its reliability, productivity, and adaptability, offering consistent yields of high-quality fruit across a wide range of climates.
