First developed at Purdue University Breeding Program in the 1970s and released to the public in 1988, the PRI2845-1 apple is another excellent example of that programs Disease Resistance Breeding Program. Crossed from PRI 1018-101 and NJ 50 and fortunately renamed Williams Pride after Edwin B. Williams- long time leader and professor emeritus of the breeding program.
The apple is medium sized and flushes to a deep red color in late summer. Bred to be a disease resistant, early dessert apple. It is ready to harvest a full 8 weeks before the Delicious varieties. Its flesh is yellow and easy to bite through but also still kinda crunchy. Not a half bad apple. Juicy and probably more Brix than other early apples. This apple would be good to eat and for cider~ it would also be good as apple sauce. People should primarily plant this tree for its disease resistance for organic growers. The apple works well for its ripening time and is easy to grow.
